Therapeutic Approach

Because every individual, couple, and group is unique, my style of therapy may differ somewhat depending on you. I believe therapy is best when it is interactive, experiential and based on the needs of each client. I work with people to highlight their usual ways of relating and to increase their awareness of themselves and the choices they make. Therapy often begins by attending to what you are aware of and what you need. For many, this means slowing down enough to allow feelings to emerge.

Psychotherapy can be many things.  Many times we will use our dialogue and relationship as the way to create change, but we may use other psychotherapy methods too.   For example we might use role playing, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), LI (Life Span Integration), PE (prolonged exposure therapy), psycho-education, books, self-help assignments between appointments, etc.   Much of what we will use in your therapy will depending on what works.  I will share with you what is known about various methods and their effectiveness as we decide together the directions we will take.  We will also pay attention to the nature of our relationship as well as to the influence of family of origin experiences and your development over your lifetime.
