Therapy Groups

Women’s Survivor of Childhood Abuse Group
This group is for women who have experienced sexual and/or physical abuse in childhood. Childhood abuse can sometimes affect women’s lives years afterward, especially the important relationships in their lives. Many women who have had these kinds of experiences benefit from group therapy, especially when members feel safe. As a group, women can feel better, reclaim a sense of self, and feel more confident and secure again by sharing their similarities and differences.  This group meets weekly.

Women's Group - Survivors of Violent Crimes (includes Witnesses of Violent Crime)
This group is for women who have survived or witnessed a violent crime at some point during their adulthood.  This would include survivors of rape, other sexual assault, domestic violence, physical assault for example.  Women who have witnessed severe violence might be a good fit for this group as well.  Women not only gain strength from shared experiences of surviving interpersonal violence, but also shared experiences of how others responded to them after the experience.  The group will include some psycho-educational components as well as sharing, feedback, and suggestions.  This group meets every other week.

Adult Psychotherapy Group
This group is intended for adults with a variety of issues such as life transition issues, problem patterns in relationships, anxiety and/or depression, etc..  Members often find that they are able to get support, ideas, and feedback from other group members.  In addition, we will use the interactions between members in the group as a way of practicing relationships outside of group.  This group meets weekly.

Coping Skills
It really is possible to actively manage your own experience of your daily life by developing some healthy and effective coping skills.  In this group you can learn new behaviors and new ways to adjust your emotional state.  In addition, you will be exposed to new perspectives and ideas about how to view yourself and your world that can provide  a framework for using your new skills more effectively.

All of these therapy groups utilize a number of therapeutic techniques to help members attain their therapy goals.  One technique that we will rely on is sometimes called “process oriented” or “here-and-now” work.  This method allows us to use the therapy relationships between group members to help members with their relationships in the real world.  For example, if we have one member that has always felt shy and wants to work on being more outgoing, that member can get feedback from other group members and practice ways of being more outgoing in group.  Another member might be worried about how friends or co-workers perceive her/him.  This member might be able to ask group members how they react to her/him as a way of gaining confidence or valuable feedback about possible ways to change.
